Lesson 2: Best Foods – Flakes, Pellets, Live, and Frozen
A clear breakdown of the best food options for guppies, from everyday staples to special treats.
The Food Options (And What I Actually Use)
There are a lot of fish food options out there, and it can be overwhelming. Here's my honest breakdown of what works, what's worth the money, and what you can skip.
Everyday Staple: Quality Flake Food
A good flake food is the backbone of most guppy diets. Look for:
- High protein content (40%+ is ideal)
- Whole fish or shrimp as the first ingredient (not "fish meal" or fillers)
- Added vitamins and minerals
Brands I like: Fluval Bug Bites (technically micro-granules), Omega One flakes, or Hikari Fancy Guppy. Avoid the cheapest generic brands — they're mostly filler.
Tip: Crush flakes between your fingers before feeding. Guppies have small mouths, and smaller pieces mean less waste sinking to the bottom.
Micro Pellets
Some guppy keepers prefer micro pellets over flakes. They're less messy, sink slower, and are easier to portion. Fluval Bug Bites for small fish are excellent — they're made from black soldier fly larvae and packed with protein.
Frozen Foods (The Treat That Makes a Difference)
This is where you level up your guppies' diet. Frozen foods offer nutrition that dried foods can't fully replicate.
- Frozen brine shrimp — A guppy favorite. Great for color enhancement.
- Frozen daphnia — Excellent for digestion. Almost like a natural laxative for fish.
- Frozen bloodworms — Very protein-rich. Feed sparingly as a treat (once or twice a week max).
How to feed frozen food: Thaw a small piece in a cup of tank water for a minute, then add a tiny amount to the tank. Don't drop a frozen cube straight in — it's too much food at once.
Live Foods
Live foods are the gold standard for nutrition and enrichment. Your guppies will go absolutely wild for them.
- Baby brine shrimp — Perfect for fry and adults. You can hatch your own (it's easier than it sounds).
- Daphnia — Available at some fish stores or culturable at home.
- Micro worms — Easy to culture and great for fry.
Live food isn't required, but it's a wonderful supplement if you're interested in trying it.
Vegetables (Yes, Really!)
Guppies enjoy the occasional veggie:
- Blanched peas — Skin removed, squished. Helps with digestion.
- Blanched zucchini or cucumber — Thin slices, weighted down.
- Blanched spinach — Small amounts occasionally.
"Blanched" just means boiled for 30 seconds to soften. Let it cool before adding to the tank.
My Weekly Feeding Schedule
- Monday-Friday: High-quality flakes or pellets
- Saturday: Frozen brine shrimp or daphnia
- Sunday: Fasting day (no food — gives their digestion a break)
Simple, varied, and my fish are thriving on it.
