Lesson 3: How Much and How Often to Feed

5 min · Part of Feeding & Nutrition

The biggest feeding mistake is giving too much. Here's how to get the portion size and frequency right.

Less Is More (Seriously)

This lesson might save you more headaches than any other in this course. Overfeeding is the single most common mistake guppy keepers make, and I was definitely guilty of it. Your guppies will always act hungry — that's just how fish are. Learning to ignore their begging faces is a skill.

How Much to Feed

The golden rule: only as much as they can eat in about 2 minutes.

That's it. If there's food still floating or sinking after 2 minutes, you gave too much. Here are some reference points:

  • A guppy's stomach is roughly the size of its eye
  • For 5-6 guppies, start with a tiny pinch of flakes — literally between two fingers
  • It will look like you're not giving enough. You probably are.

How Often to Feed

For adult guppies:

  • Once or twice a day is perfect
  • If feeding twice, make each portion even smaller
  • One fasting day per week is beneficial (I do Sundays)

For guppy fry (babies):

  • 3-4 times daily in very tiny amounts
  • Their tiny stomachs need frequent small meals
  • Crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp work great

What Happens When You Overfeed

I learned all of this firsthand:

  • Uneaten food rots → ammonia spike → sick fish
  • Cloudy water → bacterial bloom from excess nutrients
  • Algae explosion → excess nutrients fuel algae growth
  • Bloated fish → digestive problems, constipation, swim bladder issues
  • Dirty substrate → more cleaning work for you

What Happens When You Underfeed

Honestly? It's pretty hard to underfeed guppies unless you're genuinely forgetting to feed them for days. A healthy guppy can go a week or more without food (though I don't recommend it). If you're going on a short weekend trip, they'll be perfectly fine without food for 2-3 days. Those vacation feeder blocks are unnecessary and can actually foul the water.

Practical Tips

  • Watch them eat — especially at first. This tells you the right amount.
  • Remove uneaten food — if you overshoot, scoop out what's left with a small net.
  • Feed at the same time each day — guppies learn routines and it's fun to watch them get excited.
  • Turn off the filter briefly during feeding — this prevents food from getting sucked away before fish can eat it (optional but helpful with strong filters).

What I Wish I'd Known

It took me weeks to stop overfeeding. Every guide says "feed less than you think" and every beginner ignores it. I'm telling you from experience: when in doubt, feed less. Your fish will not starve. Your water quality will thank you.
